How to decorate a rented flat without losing your deposit

Almost everything on this page works without drilling, and that's deliberate. But the removal is where deposits are lost, so a few points matter.

Test any adhesive in a hidden spot first — inside a wardrobe or behind a door — and leave it a week before committing to a whole wall. Adhesion varies enormously with paint type and age.
Fresh emulsion is the highest risk. Paint applied within the last few months hasn't fully cured, and strong adhesive will lift it. Wait, or use a lower-tack option.
Warm the adhesive before removal with a hairdryer on low. This softens it and lets panels peel away rather than tear the surface.
Peel slowly, at a shallow angle back on itself rather than straight out from the wall.
Take a photo of the wall before you start. Useful evidence at checkout if there's a dispute about pre-existing marks.

How to use 3D wall panels well

Foam and brick-effect panels transform a wall cheaply, but they look best used deliberately rather than everywhere.

One feature wall, not four. Panelling every wall in a room makes it feel smaller and reads as a covering rather than a finish.
Behind the bed, the sofa or a TV are the walls that carry it best — they're the ones the eye rests on.
Measure and order 10-15% extra. You'll need offcuts around sockets and edges, and dye lots vary between orders.
Start from the centre and work out, so any part-panels land at the edges where they're least visible.
Clean the wall first. Dust and grease are the main causes of panels lifting at the corners weeks later.

How to hang wall art properly

Centre at eye level — around 145-150cm from floor to the middle of the piece. Hanging too high is the most common error and it makes rooms feel unbalanced.
Above furniture, leave 15-20cm between the top of a sofa or headboard and the bottom of the frame.
Aim for two-thirds the width of the furniture below. A small canvas over a large sofa looks like an afterthought.
For a gallery wall, arrange it on the floor first, photograph it, then transfer to the wall. Cut paper templates if you're using nails.
Adhesive strips work up to their stated weight — check it, and use two strips rather than one at the limit.

How to arrange artificial flowers so they don't look artificial

Bend the stems. Factory-straight stems are the giveaway. Real flowers curve and lean.
Vary the heights within an arrangement rather than cutting everything level.
Use a vase you can't see through, or add stones or floral foam — visible plastic stems undo the effect entirely.
Dust them monthly. A hairdryer on cool, or a quick shake outside, keeps silk looking fresh; dusty artificial flowers look worse than none.
Keep them out of direct sun, which fades silk and plastic surprisingly fast.

How to light a room properly

British homes get limited natural light for much of the year, and one central ceiling light is rarely enough.

Three sources per room: ceiling, something at seated height, and something low or accent. The difference this makes to how large a room feels is considerable.
Warm white (2700-3000K) for living rooms and bedrooms; cool white (4000K+) for kitchens and workspaces. Mixing them in one room looks wrong even if you can't say why.
Check dimmability before pairing an LED fitting with a dimmer switch — non-dimmable LEDs flicker, buzz or fail.

Artificial Christmas trees and seasonal pieces are worth buying early — the popular sizes sell through by late November, and storage between years is what determines whether one lasts a decade. Store trees in a box rather than a bag, in a dry space rather than a loft that gets damp, and fluff the branches when it comes out rather than expecting it to recover on its own.
