How to choose a watch size that suits your wrist

Case diameter is the measurement that decides whether a watch looks right, and it's rarely mentioned in listings.

Measure your wrist with a tape measure or a strip of paper. Under 15cm is a small wrist, 15-17cm average, above that larger.
Small wrists (under 15cm): case diameters of 26-34mm sit well. Anything above 38mm will overhang.
Average wrists (15-17cm): 34-38mm is the comfortable range.
The case shouldn't overhang the sides of your wrist. If the lugs — the arms holding the strap — extend past the flat of your wrist, the watch is too big and will sit awkwardly.
Strap width should be roughly half the case diameter for a balanced look.

How to change a watch strap

Replacing a strap is the cheapest way to change how a watch looks, and most can be done at home.

Check the lug width first — the gap between the lugs in millimetres. This is what determines which straps fit, and it's the measurement people most often get wrong. Measure with a ruler if the specification isn't stated.
Spring bars hold conventional straps. A spring bar tool costs a few pounds and makes the job straightforward; a small flathead screwdriver works but risks scratching the case.
Apple Watch bands slide in on a proprietary fitting — press the release button on the back and slide the band out sideways. Check whether you need the 38/40/41mm or 42/44/45/49mm size, as they aren't interchangeable.
Keep the original strap. Watches with their original parts hold value better.

Choosing a strap material

Silicone is the practical choice for exercise and daily wear — waterproof, easy to clean, comfortable in heat. It attracts dust and can discolour with sun cream.
Nylon and braided straps are breathable and light, comfortable in summer, and forgiving of a wrist that changes size through the day. They hold moisture, so rinse after swimming.
Stainless steel looks smartest and lasts longest, but needs sizing — links are removed to fit, which is a small job at a jeweller or with a link removal tool.
Milanese mesh adjusts infinitely with a magnetic clasp, which makes it the easiest to get comfortable.

Understanding water resistance

Ratings are widely misunderstood and this causes a lot of ruined watches.

3ATM / 30m: splashes and rain only. Not for swimming, not for showering.
5ATM / 50m: swimming and shallow water.
10ATM / 100m: swimming and snorkelling.
IP67: dust-tight, brief immersion — fine for handwashing and rain, not swimming.

No rating covers hot showers, saunas or hot tubs. Heat and steam expand the seals and let water past, which is the most common way watches are damaged. Also note that water resistance degrades over time as gaskets age.

How to look after a watch

Rinse in fresh water after the sea or a pool. Salt and chlorine corrode cases and degrade seals
Clean the strap regularly — silicone and nylon hold sweat and skin, which causes irritation as much as odour
Keep magnets away from mechanical watches; they can magnetise the movement and affect accuracy
Replace a quartz battery promptly when it stops. A leaking battery left inside can damage the movement
Store away from direct sun, which fades dials and perishes straps
