Boys' T-Shirts

What makes a children's t-shirt last

Children's tees fail in three predictable places, and all three are visible before you buy.

• The neckline goes first. A ribbed collar with a visible band springs back; a thin single-layer neck stretches within a term and the top looks finished even when the fabric is fine. This is the best single predictor of lifespan.
• The print cracks. Screen prints last; transfers that sit on the fabric like a plastic layer crack and peel. Feel it if you can, a good print feels like part of the fabric.
• The body twists. Cheap jersey is knitted as a tube and the side seams spiral after a few washes. Proper side seams stay straight.

Why two-piece sets are practical for children

• No matching required: which matters when a child dresses themselves
• Both pieces wear out together, so you replace as a unit rather than ending up with orphan tops
• Sized as a pair, so if the set fits, both halves fit

The trade-off is versatility: a set gives you one outfit, where separates give several. For younger children the convenience usually wins; for older ones who care what they wear, separates get more use.

How to size children's t-shirts

• Use height, not age. Age labels are averages and children vary enormously.
• One size up if buying ahead, never two, sleeves over hands get pushed up and stay damp.
• Check the neck opening for younger children. A tight neck over the head is a common reason a perfectly good top is refused.
• Cotton shrinks slightly on the first hot wash. Wash cool if it fits exactly.

How to keep prints looking new

• Wash inside out, every time. Drum friction against the print is what cracks it. This habit alone roughly doubles the life of a printed tee
• Wash at 30-40°C. Hot water sets stains and degrades prints
• Line dry. Tumble drying cracks prints and shrinks cotton out of its size
• Never iron over a print: inside out, or with a cloth on top
• Treat food and grass stains cold and immediately. A hot wash before the stain is out sets it permanently

Grass stains specifically

Grass is a plant dye and doesn't respond to normal washing. Treat with a little washing-up liquid or a stain remover worked into the mark, left for fifteen minutes, then washed cold. Never hot first, heat sets it for good.

How many tees does a child need

Seven to ten for school-age children covers a week with spares if you wash weekly. Children at primary age grow roughly a size a year, so large quantities in one size rarely get worn out before being outgrown. Multi-packs are the efficient way to restock once you know a fit works.
