How to choose the right bag for how you live

Bag choice is mostly a question of what you carry and how far you walk with it.

• Tote: open, roomy, carried on the shoulder or in the hand. Best for work, laptops and anyone who carries a lot. The trade-off is security, an open tote is easy to reach into on a busy train.
• Crossbody: worn across the body, hands free, weight distributed. The most practical for travel, cities and anyone with a pushchair. Smaller capacity by design.
• Bucket bag: deep and drawstring-topped. Holds more than it looks and closes securely; harder to find things in.
• Shoulder bag: the middle ground: structured, moderate capacity, more formal than a crossbody.

If you're buying one bag, a medium crossbody with a wide adjustable strap covers the most situations.

What to check before buying

• Strap width and adjustability. A thin strap under load cuts into the shoulder; a wide one distributes it. Adjustable straps matter more than most people expect, particularly for crossbody wear.
• How it closes. A zip top is significantly more secure than a magnetic snap or an open top, worth prioritising for travel and public transport.
• Interior organisation. One large compartment means everything sinks to the bottom. A zipped inner pocket for keys and phone changes daily use more than any other feature.
• The empty weight. A heavy bag before you've put anything in it is a bad start, especially in leather-look finishes with a lot of hardware.
• Base studs keep the bottom off wet ground and are a small sign of better construction.

How to care for PU and faux leather

PU leather is durable and easy to live with, but it fails differently from real leather. It cracks and peels rather than developing patina, and heat is the main cause.

• Wipe with a damp cloth and dry immediately. Don't soak it.
• Keep it away from radiators, car dashboards and direct sun. Heat dries the coating and is the single biggest cause of cracking.
• Don't use leather conditioner: PU isn't leather and oil-based products can break down the surface.
• Stuff it when stored with tissue or a scarf so it holds its shape, and keep it in a dust bag rather than compressed at the back of a wardrobe.
• Treat ink and denim transfer immediately. Dark denim transfers onto light PU bags and becomes permanent within days.

How to carry a bag safely in a city

• Wear crossbody straps across the body, not slung on one shoulder. This is what makes them harder to snatch
• Keep the opening facing your body in crowds
• Zip closures on public transport. Open totes are the easiest target
• Don't hang a bag on the back of a chair in a café or restaurant, which is where most opportunistic theft happens

How many bags do you actually need

Three covers most people: a roomy everyday bag, a small crossbody for evenings and quick trips, and something more formal for occasions. Beyond that, bags tend to sit unused, and the one that gets carried is nearly always the one that's comfortable rather than the one that's prettiest.
