UV protection and polarisation are different things
This is the most important thing to check before buying any sunglasses.
UV protection is what protects your eyes. Look for UV400 or 100% UV protection, and a CE or UKCA mark. Polarisation is a comfort feature that cuts glare from reflective surfaces — wet roads, water, snow — and has nothing to do with UV.
Dark lenses without UV protection are worse than no sunglasses at all, because the darkness opens your pupils and lets more UV into the eye. Always check the rating rather than assuming.
Choosing a frame that suits your face
- The frame should be as wide as your face, or very slightly wider. Narrower frames pinch at the temples and slide down.
- Your eyes should sit near the centre of each lens.
- The frame should not touch your cheeks when you smile — that causes smudging and marks.
- Balance the shape: softer, rounded frames suit angular faces; more structured frames suit rounder ones. This is a guide rather than a rule.
- Larger frames give more coverage, which matters for protecting the delicate skin around the eyes from sun damage.
How to look after them
- Rinse before wiping. Dry-wiping grinds grit into the coating and is the main cause of scratches
- Microfibre cloth only — never a shirt, tissue or paper towel
- Avoid glass cleaner, which strips lens coatings
- Never leave them on a car dashboard. Heat warps frames and can delaminate polarised layers
- Rinse after the sea — salt corrodes hinges and screws
- Store in a case, lenses facing up if loose in a bag
Common questions
How do I know if they have UV protection?
Look for UV400 or 100% UV protection in the specification, plus a CE or UKCA mark. Lens darkness tells you nothing about UV protection.
Are polarised lenses better?
Better for glare and comfort, but polarisation is separate from eye protection — you need UV400 for that.
Why is my phone screen dark through polarised lenses?
Some LCD screens are themselves polarised, so at certain angles the two cancel out. Tilting your head fixes it.
Do bigger frames protect better?
Yes — more coverage means less UV reaching the eye and the skin around it from the sides.
