Jeggings or jeans: which suits a child better
Jeggings are leggings cut and finished to look like denim, and for children they solve several problems that real jeans create.
- Elasticated waist. No buttons or stiff zips, which means a child can manage the toilet independently, a genuine consideration for younger school children.
- Stretch means movement. Rigid denim restricts climbing and running; jeggings do not.

- Rotate two pairs. Elastane recovers with a day's rest, so alternating makes both last longer
If they have already gone baggy
A cold wash and line dry usually restores most of the shape, provided they have not been tumble dried repeatedly. Once the elastane has been heat-damaged, it does not come back.
Dealing with knees and stains
- Reinforce before they go through. Iron-on patches on the inside of the knee, applied when the fabric starts thinning, extend the life considerably
- Treat grass and mud cold. Grass is a plant dye, work in washing-up liquid or stain remover, leave fifteen minutes, then wash cold. Never wash hot before the mark is out, which sets it permanently
- Ink and paint come out better with cold water and dabbing than with rubbing, which spreads them
School and uniform
