How to set up a desk that doesn't hurt your back
Most back and neck problems from desk work come from setup rather than the chair itself. Getting this right costs nothing.
- Chair height first. Feet flat on the floor, knees at roughly 90 degrees, thighs parallel to the ground. If your feet don't reach, use a footrest rather than lowering the seat.
- Desk height second. Elbows at about 90 degrees when your hands are on the keyboard, forearms roughly parallel to the floor. Shoulders relaxed, not hunched.
- Screen last. Top of the screen at or just below eye level, about an arm's length away. Looking down at a laptop for hours is the single most common cause of neck pain in home workers.
- Use a separate keyboard and mouse if you work on a laptop. You cannot position a laptop screen and keyboard correctly at the same time — one or the other will be wrong.
How to choose an office chair
- Adjustable lumbar support matters more than padding. The support should meet the inward curve of your lower back — if it sits too high or low, it does nothing.
- Seat depth: you want two to three fingers' gap between the back of your knees and the seat edge. Too deep and it presses behind the knees; too shallow and your thighs aren't supported.
- Adjustable armrests should let your shoulders relax with elbows supported. Fixed armrests that are too high cause shoulder tension; too low and you lean.
- Mesh or padded: mesh breathes and suits warm rooms and long sessions. Padded and leather-look is warmer and can feel more comfortable initially but hotter over hours.
- Check the weight rating and the warranty — gas lifts are the most common failure point on budget chairs.
Gaming chairs versus office chairs
Gaming chairs are styled after racing seats, with high backs, deep bolsters and a reclining function. They look distinctive and many people find them comfortable, but the bolsters that hold you in place while gaming can restrict movement over a working day. A conventional ergonomic chair with proper lumbar adjustment is usually the better choice for full-time desk work; a gaming chair suits mixed use and long recreational sessions.
How to use a standing desk properly
Standing desks help, but only if used sensibly — standing all day causes its own problems.
- Alternate rather than commit. A common approach is 30 minutes sitting to 15 standing, adjusted to what suits you. The benefit comes from changing position, not from standing itself.
- Build up gradually. Start with 15-20 minutes standing at a time — going straight to hours causes foot, knee and lower back pain.
- Reset the screen height each time. The screen needs to move with the desk or you'll be looking down while standing.
- An anti-fatigue mat makes a substantial difference on hard floors.
- Wear supportive shoes, or at least not slippers. Standing barefoot on a hard floor for hours is hard on the feet.
Setting up in a small home
- Measure the desk footprint and the chair's swing radius — a chair needs about 90cm behind the desk to move freely
- Check cable routing on electric desks. The desk moves; the cables need slack, and trapped cables are a common cause of damage
- Standing desks need clearance above too — check for shelves and sloped ceilings at full extension
- Flip-up armrests let a chair tuck fully under a desk, which matters in a room that's also a bedroom or living room
How to look after a chair
- Check and tighten bolts every few months — chairs loosen with daily use and a wobble caught early doesn't become a broken joint
- Clean castors — hair and carpet fibres wrap around the axles and stop them rolling, which then damages flooring
- Wipe faux leather with a damp cloth, never leather conditioner, and keep it away from radiators which cause cracking
- Vacuum mesh backs occasionally; dust builds in the weave
Common questions
Does the furniture arrive assembled?
Most arrives flat-packed. Assembly time and tools are on individual product pages.
What height should my desk be?
Whatever puts your elbows at roughly 90 degrees with shoulders relaxed — typically 70-75cm for a seated desk, though it depends on your height and chair.
Is a gaming chair suitable for working from home?
It can be, though the deep side bolsters restrict movement over a full working day. A conventional ergonomic chair with adjustable lumbar support is usually better for full-time desk work.
How long should I stand at a standing desk?
Alternate rather than standing all day — around 15 minutes standing per 30 sitting is a common starting point, built up gradually.
