How to choose boots for a British winter
Boots do more work here than any other shoe, and three things decide whether a pair is genuinely useful.
- Grip. The sole matters more than the upper. A smooth sole on wet pavement, wet leaves or a frosty morning is genuinely hazardous — look for a patterned rubber tread rather than flat leather-look soles.
- Water resistance. Few fashion boots are truly waterproof, but a treated upper and a sealed welt make the difference between damp feet and soaked ones. A spray-on protector is worth applying before first wear and reapplying through the season.
- Lining. Plush or fleece lining adds real warmth for standing around — school runs, waiting for trains, watching football in February. Unlined boots are three-season rather than winter.
How to size boots

- Check the calf measurement on anything taller than an ankle boot. Calf width varies far more between people than foot length, and it's the most common reason taller boots don't fit.
- Your heel shouldn't lift more than a few millimetres when you walk. Excessive lift causes blisters and means the boot is too long.
How to wear ankle boots without shortening your leg
Ankle boots cut the leg line, which is why they can look awkward with certain hems.
- With trousers: either cover the top of the boot completely, or have a clear gap of bare ankle or visible sock. A hem that lands exactly on the boot top is the awkward option.
- With midi skirts and dresses: ankle boots work well, and closing the gap with opaque tights in a similar tone lengthens the line considerably.
- With minis: a heeled ankle boot is more balanced than a flat one.
How to care for boots so they survive the season
- Clean off salt immediately. Winter road salt leaves white tide marks and corrodes materials — wipe with a damp cloth the same day
- Dry away from radiators. Direct heat cracks leather and leather-look uppers and can unstick soles. Stuff with newspaper and dry at room temperature
- Reproof water-resistant boots at the start of the season and again mid-winter
- Use a boot shaper or roll of paper in taller boots so they don't crease at the ankle and collapse
- Replace heel tips and resole early. A good pair of boots is worth repairing; wait until the sole wears through and it usually isn't
