How to choose boots for British weather
Boots do more work here than any other footwear, and three things decide whether a pair is genuinely useful through a winter.
- Grip comes first. The sole matters more than the upper. A smooth leather-look sole on wet pavement, wet leaves or a frosty morning is genuinely hazardous. Look for a patterned rubber tread.
- Water resistance. Few fashion boots are truly waterproof, but a treated upper and a well-sealed welt make the difference between damp feet and soaked ones. A spray-on protector applied before first wear and again mid-season is worth the ten minutes.
- Construction at the sole join. Glued soles are cheaper and eventually part from the upper; stitched or welted soles can be resoled and last years longer.
How to size boots
- Allow for thicker socks. A boot fitted with thin socks in September will be tight with winter socks in January. Size accordingly, or try them on with the socks you will actually wear.

- Clean off winter road salt the same day. Salt is corrosive and leaves permanent white tide marks on leather.
- Polish and condition every few weeks. This is not cosmetic — it stops leather drying out and splitting at the flex point across the toe.
- Never dry on a radiator. Direct heat cracks leather and can unstick soles. Stuff with newspaper and dry at room temperature.
- Resole before the sole wears through. Once it breaches the upper, most boots cannot be repaired.
- Undo the laces. Kicking boots off without unlacing destroys the heel counter, which is what makes old boots collapse at the back.
What to wear them with
Ankle boots work with jeans, chinos and tailored trousers. The hem should either sit on the top of the boot or finish just above it — a hem that bunches over the boot shaft looks unintentional. With slim or tapered trousers, a boot with a low profile sits better than a chunky one.
