Girls' watches at FlipBuy UK: kids' quartz and digital watches, fitness trackers and smart watches for children, alongside replacement straps.
How to choose a first watch for a child
A child's first watch is usually bought to help them learn the time, and the choice affects whether that works.
- Analogue teaches the time. Hands on a dial give children a visual sense of duration, quarter past, half past, ten minutes left, that digital does not. If learning is the point, analogue is the better buy.
- Digital is easier to read while they are still learning, and removes the frustration. Many parents buy one of each, or a watch showing both.
- Clear numerals and strong contrast matter more than styling. A cluttered dial is hard for a child to read quickly.
- A second hand helps children understand seconds passing, which is the hardest part of telling the time to grasp.
What actually matters in a kids' watch
- Water resistance above everything else. Children wash their hands, play in puddles, and forget to take watches off in the bath. Look for at least 3ATM; 5ATM if they will swim in it. IP ratings alone are not enough for a child.
- Check the strap adjusts small enough. Adult-length straps on children's watches are a frequent complaint, check the minimum wrist size, not just the maximum.
- A buckle rather than a folding clasp is easier for small hands to manage independently.
- Impact resistance. Children's watches get knocked constantly. A resin or silicone case survives what a metal one dents.
- Replaceable battery or strap. A watch where the strap can be swapped lasts considerably longer than one where a broken strap ends it.
Fitness trackers for children: what to expect
Kids' fitness trackers are popular gifts and mostly work best as step counters and novelty rather than health tools.
- Heart rate readings are not accurate on small wrists. The optical sensors are designed for adult anatomy and movement.
- Children do not need to monitor their activity levels. Step goals can be a fun motivator, but there is no health reason for a child to track calories or exercise metrics, and for some children an emphasis on numbers is unhelpful.
- Check what data is collected and where it goes. Some children's trackers require an account and app; it is worth knowing what is stored and being comfortable with it before setting one up.
- Watches with location tracking or calling need a SIM and a subscription in most cases. Check ongoing costs before buying.
How to help a child look after a watch
- Take it off for swimming unless it is rated 5ATM, and always for hot baths, heat damages seals whatever the rating
- Rinse after the sea: salt corrodes cases and buckles
- Store it in the same place when not worn. Most children's watches are lost rather than broken
- Replace a dead battery promptly. A leaking cell inside will ruin the movement
- Check the strap holes as they grow: a strap on its last hole is about to be outgrown
Buying as a gift
Watches are a common gift for birthdays, Christmas and school milestones. If you are unsure of taste, a plain colour with a simple dial is safer than a character design, which children outgrow faster. Check the age guidance and, more importantly, the minimum wrist size, a watch that will not tighten enough is unwearable however much they like it.
Common questions
What age is a first watch suitable for?
Most children can begin learning analogue time from around five or six. Digital watches suit younger children who simply want to know the time.
Are these waterproof?
Ratings vary. Look for at least 3ATM for daily wear and 5ATM for swimming, the rating is on each product page.
Will the strap fit a small wrist?
Check the minimum wrist size on the product page rather than the maximum, which is what usually catches people out.
Are kids' fitness trackers accurate?
Step counts are reasonable; heart rate is not reliable on small wrists. Treat them as fun rather than as health tools.
