How to measure your bra size at home

Research repeatedly suggests most women wear the wrong bra size, and the usual error is a band too loose with a cup too small. Measuring takes two minutes.

Band: wearing a non-padded bra, measure snugly around your ribcage directly under the bust. The tape should be firm and level all the way round. Round to the nearest even number — that's your band size.
Bust: measure loosely around the fullest part of the bust, keeping the tape level and not compressing.
Cup: subtract the band from the bust. Each inch of difference is one cup size. 1in = A, 2in = B, 3in = C, 4in = D, 5in = DD, 6in = E, 7in = F, and so on through UK sizing.

Note that UK cup sizing differs from US and EU above a D cup. UK runs D, DD, E, F, FF, G; US runs D, DD/E, DDD/F. If a size chart looks unfamiliar, check which system it uses before ordering.

How to tell if a bra fits

The size is a starting point; the fit test is what confirms it.

The band does 80% of the support work, not the straps. It should sit level all the way round, and you should just fit two fingers underneath. If it rides up at the back, it's too big.
Fasten a new bra on the loosest hook. Bands stretch with wear, and the tighter hooks are there for later.
The centre panel should sit flat against your breastbone. If it lifts away, the cup is too small.
No spillage, no gaping. Overflow at the top or side means a bigger cup; wrinkling in the cup means a smaller one.
Straps carry weight, they don't create support. If you're tightening straps to lift, the band is too big.

Sister sizing

If the cup fits but the band doesn't, move in sister sizes rather than jumping blindly. Going down a band size means going up a cup — 38DD becomes 36E. Going up a band means down a cup — 38DD becomes 40D. The cup volume stays roughly the same.

Choosing the right style

Minimiser

Redistributes rather than compresses, reducing the projection forward by around an inch. Useful under shirts that gape, and for anyone who finds a fuller bust makes tailoring difficult. Full-cup minimisers give the most coverage and support.

Wireless and seamless

More comfortable for all-day wear, working from home and travel. Modern wireless bras with a firm band can support well, though very full busts generally get more lift from an underwire.

Push-up

Adds shape and lift with padding at the base. Best under close-fitting tops; less practical for all-day comfort.

Bralette

Unstructured and light. Comfortable for lounging and smaller busts; not designed for support.

How to wash bras so they last

A well-cared-for bra lasts around a year of regular wear. Machine washing halves that.

Hand wash in cool water with mild detergent where you can. If you machine wash, fasten the hooks, use a mesh lingerie bag, and choose a cold gentle cycle.
Never tumble dry. Heat destroys elastane in the band, which is what actually holds the bra up.
Dry flat or hang by the centre panel, not by the straps, which stretches them.
Don't wring moulded cups — it creases the foam permanently.
Rotate three bras. Elastane needs a day to recover; wearing the same bra daily wears it out several times faster.

When to replace a bra

When the band no longer feels supportive on the tightest hook, when underwires poke through or distort, when cups wrinkle or the foam creases, or when straps won't stay tightened. Also remeasure after significant weight change, pregnancy or breastfeeding — size changes are normal and often substantial.
