How to buy loungewear you'll actually leave the house in
Most loungewear gets bought for the sofa and then worn to the shop, the school run and the supermarket. Buying with that in mind changes what to look for.
- Choose a plain colour over a bold print for the piece you'll wear most. Prints date faster and read more obviously as loungewear.
- Look for a tapered or cuffed leg. A jogger that narrows at the ankle reads as deliberate; a straight-legged one reads as pyjamas.
- Check the waistband. A drawstring inside an elasticated waist lasts far longer than elastic alone, and lets you adjust it as the elastic softens.
- Pockets matter. Side pockets are the difference between joggers you can wear out and joggers you can't.
How to choose between a set and separates
A two-piece tracksuit set looks considered and takes no thought — but it's one outfit. Separates in coordinating colours give you three or four combinations from the same spend, and the hoodie works over jeans while the joggers work with a tee.
If you're buying your first pieces, separates in neutral colours go further. Buy the set when you know you'll wear it as a set.
How to get the fit right
- Oversized hoodies are already cut generously. Take your normal size — sizing up gives you sleeves past your hands.
- Joggers should fit the hip and waist, then be checked for length. Cuffed styles are forgiving on length; straight hems are not.
- For a set, size for the larger half. If you're bigger on the bottom, take the size that fits the joggers and accept a slightly roomier hoodie — the reverse never works.
- Check the composition. Cotton-heavy blends breathe better and feel softer; polyester-heavy ones hold their shape and dry faster but can feel clammy indoors.
How to stop fleece going flat and bobbly
Pilling — the small bobbles on the surface — is the main reason loungewear starts looking tired, and it's almost entirely caused by friction in the wash.
- Wash inside out, which puts the friction on the lining rather than the outer surface
- Wash with similar fabrics. Washing fleece with towels or denim is what causes most pilling — rough fabrics abrade soft ones
- Cool wash, gentle cycle, lower spin. Heat and agitation both break down the fibres
- No fabric conditioner. It coats the fleece pile and flattens it permanently — this is the most common mistake
- Line dry or tumble on low. High heat is what turns soft fleece scratchy
- Use a fabric shaver on bobbles that do appear. Five minutes restores a hoodie that looks past it
How to build a loungewear rotation
Three pieces cover most people: one pair of joggers in a neutral, one hoodie or sweatshirt that works with both joggers and jeans, and one softer pair kept strictly for indoors. That last distinction matters — keeping one pair that never leaves the house means they stay clean and comfortable, and the others take the wear.
Loungewear versus pyjamas
The line is about fabric weight and coverage. Loungewear is heavier, opaque and cut to be seen; pyjamas are lighter and cut for sleeping. Wearing pyjamas as loungewear tends to shorten their life, because they're not made for sitting on sofas and floors.
Common questions
Are the tracksuit sets sold as a pair?
Yes — the two-piece sets include both the top and the joggers. Individual pieces are listed separately.
Do the joggers have pockets?
Several do; it's noted in the key features on each product page.
What size should I take in an oversized hoodie?
Your normal size. The extra room is built into the cut.
Can these be worn to the gym?
The joggers, yes. Fleece hoodies retain heat and moisture, so they're better as a layer before and after than during.
