How to make a rented flat feel like yours

Most renters can't paint, drill or change the flooring. Almost everything on this page works within those constraints.

How to buy storage that actually helps

Storage furniture fails when it's bought before the problem is understood. A few questions worth answering first:

What are you storing, and how often do you need it? Daily-use items want open or fabric drawers; seasonal items want closed cabinets where dust isn't an issue.
Measure the space and the doorway. The second one catches people out — a cabinet that fits the alcove may not get up the stairs.
Check the drawer construction. Fabric drawer towers are light and easy to move but not suited to heavy items; wooden and board cabinets take more weight.
Look for a wall-fixing strap on anything tall, particularly with children or pets in the house. Most tall units include one and it should always be used.

How to plan lighting in a British home

British houses get limited daylight for much of the year, and a single ceiling light in the centre of the room is the most common lighting mistake.

Three light sources per room is the working rule — ceiling, a lamp at seated height, and something low or accent. A room lit from three points feels considerably larger than the same room lit from one.
Check the colour temperature. Warm white, around 2700K, suits living rooms and bedrooms. Cool white, 4000K and above, suits kitchens and workspaces and feels clinical anywhere else.
Dimmable fittings earn their cost in a room used both day and evening.

How to hang wall art so it looks right

The most common error is hanging too high.

Centre the piece at eye level — roughly 145-150cm from the floor to the middle of the artwork. This is the standard galleries use and it works in most rooms.
Above a sofa, leave 15-20cm between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the frame. More than that and the two elements stop reading as related.
The piece should be roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. A small canvas over a large sofa looks accidental.
For a gallery wall, lay it out on the floor first and photograph it before anything goes on the wall.

How to measure before buying furniture

Larger items here — sofas, dining sets, storage cabinets — are worth measuring properly for, because returning them is a genuine undertaking.

Measure the space, then subtract for walkways. Leave at least 60cm to walk past furniture, 75cm if it's the main route through a room.
Measure the route in, not just the room. Doorways, stair turns, and the diagonal of any tight corner.
Mark it out on the floor with tape before ordering. A 2-seater sofa is bigger in a room than it looks in a photograph.
Check assembly requirements on the product page — flat-pack furniture needs space and time as well as floor area.
