Smartwatches
Smartwatches and bands at FlipBuy UK — AMOLED and military-grade smartwatches with Bluetooth calling, GPS and fitness tracking, plus replacement bands for Apple Watch in nylon, silicone and stainless steel. From £8.99 bands to around £63.
Which features actually change daily use
Smartwatch specifications are written to sound comprehensive. Only a few make a practical difference.
- Screen type is the biggest one. AMOLED is brighter, sharper and readable in sunlight; standard LCD washes out outdoors. This affects satisfaction more than any other single spec.
- Built-in GPS tracks your route without carrying your phone. If you run or cycle and want to leave the phone behind, this is the feature to pay for. Watches without it borrow the phone's GPS, which means carrying it anyway.
- Bluetooth calling means a speaker and microphone in the watch — useful when driving, cooking or exercising, and the fastest way to drain the battery.
- Battery life claims assume light use. Expect roughly half the quoted figure with a bright screen, GPS running and calls taken.
- Always-on display is convenient and costs a substantial amount of battery. It is the first setting to turn off if battery life disappoints.
Health tracking — what it can and cannot do
Consumer smartwatches estimate heart rate, blood oxygen and sleep using optical sensors shining light through the skin. They are useful for spotting trends over weeks — a resting heart rate drifting upward, consistently short sleep — and that is genuinely valuable.
They are not medical devices. Readings can be affected by wrist position, skin tone, tattoos, movement and how tightly the strap is fastened. They should not be used to diagnose, monitor or make decisions about a health condition. If a reading concerns you, or you have symptoms, speak to a GP rather than the watch. Terms such as military-grade refer to physical durability testing, not to medical accuracy.
Check compatibility before ordering
Most budget smartwatches pair with both Android and iOS through a companion app, but feature support differs — replying to messages from the watch is frequently Android-only, and some notification types do not pass through on iPhone. The supported systems and app name are on each product page. If a specific feature matters to you, check it before buying rather than after.
Choosing an Apple Watch band
- Size group first. Bands come in two groups — 38/40/41mm and 42/44/45/49mm — and they are not interchangeable. Check your case size in the Watch app or on the back of the case.
- Silicone for exercise and daily wear: waterproof, easy to clean, comfortable in heat. It can discolour with sun cream.
- Nylon and braided are light and breathable, and forgiving of a wrist that changes size through the day. Rinse them after swimming.
- Stainless steel looks smartest and lasts longest, but needs links removing to fit.
- Fitting is tool-free — press the release button on the back of the watch and slide the band out sideways.
Water resistance ratings
- IP67: dust-tight, brief immersion. Fine for rain, handwashing and sweat. Not for swimming.
- 5ATM: suitable for swimming in a pool.
No rating covers hot showers, saunas or hot tubs — heat expands the seals and lets water past. This is the most common way watches are damaged, and it is not usually covered by warranty.
How to get more from the battery
- Turn off always-on display and reduce screen brightness — together these account for most of the drain
- Disable notifications you do not act on. Every buzz wakes the screen
- Charge to around 80% rather than 100% where the option exists; lithium batteries degrade fastest kept full
- Do not leave it flat for weeks. Store at around half charge if you are not wearing it
- Keep it out of hot cars. Heat causes permanent capacity loss
Common questions
Do these work with iPhone?
Most support both iOS and Android, though some features are Android-only. Compatibility is listed on each product page.
Can I swim with one?
Only if rated 5ATM. IP67 covers splashes and rain, not swimming.
Which band size fits my Apple Watch?
Bands come in 38/40/41mm and 42/44/45/49mm groups. Check your case size in the Watch app.
Are the health readings accurate?
They are useful for tracking trends rather than for precise measurement, and they are not medical devices. See a GP about any health concern.
