How to use a home blood pressure monitor properly

Home monitors are widely recommended by UK healthcare professionals, but readings are only useful if taken consistently. The NHS and British Heart Foundation both publish guidance worth reading alongside your device's instructions.

• Sit still for five minutes first, feet flat on the floor, back supported. A reading taken immediately after moving around will be higher and isn't representative.
• Use the same arm each time, at roughly the same time of day. Readings differ between arms and across the day.
• Take two or three readings a minute apart and record them all. Single readings vary considerably.
• Don't take a reading within 30 minutes of caffeine, exercise or smoking.
• Check the cuff size fits your arm. A cuff that's too small gives falsely high readings. This is the most common source of error at home.

Keep a written record and take it to appointments. Isolated high readings are common and rarely meaningful on their own; a pattern over days or weeks is what your GP will want to see.

How to choose a support brace

Knee, shoulder and back supports are widely used for general comfort during activity, but the right choice depends on why you want one, and that's worth establishing before buying.

• For general support during exercise, a light elasticated sleeve is usually enough and allows full movement.
• For more stability, braces with straps or hinges restrict movement more. That's the point, but it also means they're not for all-day wear unless advised.
• Measure before ordering. Sizing is by limb circumference at a specified point, not by clothing size, and it's on each product page.
• A brace shouldn't be painful or leave marks. If it does, it's too tight or the wrong size.

If you have an injury, persistent pain or a diagnosed condition, get advice from a GP or physiotherapist before relying on a brace, the wrong support in the wrong situation can delay recovery rather than help it.

How to look after your teeth between dentist visits

Water flossers and electric toothbrushes complement brushing rather than replacing it.

• Brush twice daily for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste. This remains the foundation, whatever device you use.
• Clean between teeth daily. A water flosser is easier to use consistently than string floss for many people, which matters more than which is theoretically better.
• Don't rinse after brushing. Spit out the excess and leave the fluoride on your teeth.
• Replace brush heads every three months, or sooner if the bristles splay.
• Start a water flosser on the lowest setting. Gums that aren't used to it will bleed initially; if bleeding persists beyond a couple of weeks, see a dentist.

How to choose a grooming kit

• Count the attachments you'll genuinely use. A 7-in-1 kit is only better than a 4-in-1 if you'll use the extra heads; most people use two or three.
• Check whether it's washable: rinseable heads are considerably easier to maintain and more hygienic.
• Cordless with a charge indicator saves the frustration of a trimmer dying mid-use.
• Look for guard combs in small increments if you're cutting hair rather than just tidying edges.

How to set up a bed for neck comfort

Neck pillows and supports help most when the rest of the setup is right.

• Your pillow should fill the gap between your head and the mattress, keeping your neck level with your spine, not tilted up or dropped down.
• Side sleepers need more height than back sleepers; front sleeping is hardest on the neck whatever pillow you use.
• Replace pillows every two years or so. A pillow that no longer springs back has stopped supporting anything.
• One pillow, not two. Stacking pillows pushes the head forward and is a common cause of morning neck stiffness.

Persistent neck pain, or pain with numbness or tingling in the arms, should be looked at by a GP rather than managed with a pillow.
