How to check leggings aren't see-through
This is the question people actually want answered, and it's the most common complaint about leggings at any price.
- Fabric weight is the real indicator. Heavier fabric with a higher denier or GSM figure is opaque; very light fabric isn't, however good the brand.
- Dark colours hide more than pale ones. Grey and light pastels are the worst offenders because the fabric thins over the stretch of the seat.
- Seamless construction generally has fewer thin points than panelled designs, but check the seat panel specifically.
- Buy your size, not smaller. Leggings go sheer when overstretched — sizing down is the single biggest cause of the problem.
- The squat test: put them on, squat in front of a mirror. If the fabric lightens noticeably, they'll be sheer in a gym.
How to choose for what you're doing
- Yoga and Pilates: seamless, soft, high-waisted with a wide waistband that won't roll during inversions. Comfort matters more than compression.
- Running and gym: more compression, and a waistband with a drawstring or pocket. Mesh panels help with heat.
- Cycling shorts and short leggings: useful under dresses and skirts as much as for exercise — they stop chafing in warm weather.
- Everyday wear: heavier fabric, plainer finish. Plaid and printed styles read as casual wear rather than gym kit.
How to get the waistband right
The waistband is what decides whether leggings stay put, and it's rarely mentioned in product descriptions.
- High-waisted with a wide band stays in place through bending, lifting and exercise. Mid-rise bands roll down on most body shapes.
- If the band digs in or rolls, the leggings are too small — not too big. Rolling is a sign of being overstretched.
- A drawstring inside the band lets you adjust as the elastic softens, which extends the life considerably.
How to wash leggings so they keep their shape
Elastane is what makes leggings work and heat is what destroys it. Almost all the care rules follow from that.
- Cold wash, inside out, on a gentle cycle
- Never tumble dry. This is the fastest way to ruin a pair — heat breaks down elastane permanently and they never recover their shape
- No fabric conditioner. It coats technical fabrics and destroys any moisture-wicking finish
- Wash after every workout. Sweat degrades elastane if left in the fabric, and it's also how gym kit develops odour that won't wash out
- Line dry away from direct sun, which fades and weakens the fibres
- Wash separately from anything with zips or Velcro, which snag and pull the surface
How long should a pair last
With regular gym use and correct washing, around a year to eighteen months before the fabric thins and the waistband loosens. Signs they're finished: pilling between the thighs, the seat going sheer when it didn't before, or the waistband no longer holding. Rotating two or three pairs makes a substantial difference — elastane needs rest to recover.
Common questions
Are these squat-proof?
Fabric weight and composition are on each product page. Heavier fabrics and darker colours are the safer choice, and buying your true size matters more than the brand.
Should I size up or down?
Take your true size. Sizing down is what makes leggings sheer and causes the waistband to roll.
Can leggings be worn as trousers?
Heavier, plainer styles work as casual trousers, particularly with a longer top. Thin gym leggings read as sportswear.
Why do leggings pill between the thighs?
Friction, and it's normal with wear. Washing inside out on a gentle cycle slows it; a fabric shaver tidies it.
