Check your mattress size first

Spacesaver cots are the narrow ones made to fit a small bedroom or alongside a bed, and their mattresses are a different size again from standard cots.

• Spacesaver cot — 100 x 52cm (this sheet). Fits mattresses 85-100cm long, 45-52cm wide.
• Cot — 120 x 60cm
• Cot bed — 140 x 70cm

Measure the mattress rather than going by the cot name — spacesaver is used loosely by different manufacturers, and this is the size most often ordered wrong.

Buy more than one

A single sheet is not enough for a baby. Night nappies leak and babies are sick, often at 3am. Packs of two and four are available and work out cheaper per sheet — this single is for topping up a set you already have, or replacing one that has worn out.

Why it must fit snugly

Lullaby Trust guidance is a firm, flat mattress with a well-fitting sheet and nothing else in the cot for babies under 12 months. A loose sheet can work free and bunch, which is a suffocation risk. Check it is taut each time you make the cot up, and replace any sheet whose elastic has slackened.

Why 100% cotton

Cotton breathes, which matters for temperature regulation — overheating is a SIDS risk factor, and a spacesaver cot in a small room warms faster than a standard cot in a nursery.
