Read this first: the TICKS rules
Safe babywearing comes down to five checks, every time you put your baby in. The UK Sling Consortium calls them TICKS.
- T — Tight. The wrap should hold your baby close with no slack. A loose sling lets them slump, which closes the airway.
- I — In view at all times. You should see your baby's face by glancing down. Fabric must never cover their face.
- C — Close enough to kiss. Their head near enough that you can tip your head and kiss their forehead.
- K — Keep chin off the chest. At least a finger's width under the chin. Chin on chest restricts the airway.
- S — Supported back. Back supported in its natural position, tummy and chest against you. A slumped C shape drops the chin onto the chest.
Check all five each time. A newborn cannot lift their head clear if their airway becomes restricted, and cannot tell you.
Why a stretchy wrap for a newborn
Stretchy wraps suit the early months better than structured carriers — the fabric moulds around a small body instead of holding it in a fixed shape. You can pre-tie the wrap and lift the baby in and out without retying, which matters when you're doing it one-handed.
Usually outgrown around 8-9kg, when the fabric begins to sag under the weight. A structured carrier is the next step after that.
Fit
One size. Ties to fit the wearer, so it works across body shapes and can be shared between two parents.
Care
Machine washable. Wash before first use.
Safety
Follow TICKS every time. Do not use a sling while cooking, drinking hot drinks, cycling or driving. Never cover your baby's face with fabric or a coat. Check for wear before each use.
If your baby was premature, had a low birth weight, or has any breathing or medical condition, speak to your health visitor or midwife first.
