This one can go at the top of the stairs

Unlike a pressure-fit gate, a retractable gate is screwed to the wall on both sides. That fixed anchor is what makes it suitable for the top of a staircase, where a pressure gate must never be used.

If you have one place in the house that genuinely needs a gate, it is almost always the top of the stairs — and this is the type to use there.

How it works

A mesh panel pulls across from a housing on one side and latches to a catch on the other. When you are not using it, it rolls away completely into the housing.

Two practical advantages over a rigid gate. There is no bar across the floor to trip over, which matters at the top of stairs more than anywhere. And it disappears when retracted, so a hallway does not permanently have a gate across it.

Fit

Spans openings up to 120cm, which is wider than most rigid gates manage. Suits awkward openings, wide landings and angled walls where a rigid frame will not sit square.

Fitting it

Screw fixings into both sides. Fix into solid timber or masonry, or use appropriate fixings for plasterboard. A retractable gate under load pulls sideways rather than pushing outwards, so the fixings must be able to take that.

Check the fixings periodically and re-tighten if needed.

Important safety information

Check the gate carries a BS EN 1930 mark on the product itself before use.

Always latch it fully — a retractable gate that is pulled across but not latched looks closed and is not. Test it by pushing before you rely on it.

A gate is a barrier, not a substitute for supervision. Suitable from around 6 months to approximately 24 months. Once a child can open the latch or climb the mesh, the gate no longer protects them.

Do not allow children to swing on or pull at the mesh.
