Read this first: where a pressure gate can and cannot go

Pressure-fit gates must never be used at the top of stairs. They hold position by tension against the door frame with no fixed anchor, and can be pushed out under load.

At the top of a staircase, use a screw-fit gate — the consistent advice from manufacturers, RoSPA and the Child Accident Prevention Trust.

Suitable for: the bottom of stairs, doorways between rooms, kitchen and hallway openings, and keeping pets out of a room.

Single gate, white

One gate. White suits a painted frame better than grey and disappears against most skirting and architrave. Most homes need at least two gates, and a two-pack is available at a lower price per gate.

  • No drilling, screws or tools
  • One-handed opening
  • Dual locking mechanism

Measuring your opening

Measure the narrowest point of the gap at the height the gate will sit.

  • 77-86cm — gate as supplied
  • 86-93cm — with a 7cm extension
  • 93-100cm — with a 14cm extension
  • 100-107cm — with both extensions
  • 107-114cm — with two 14cm extensions

Fitting it correctly

  1. Fit against solid, flat surfaces both sides — not skirting boards, radiators, spindles or unsupported plasterboard
  2. Tighten all four pressure pads evenly until the indicators engage
  3. Push hard from both sides before relying on it
  4. Re-check the tension weekly

Important safety information

Not for use at the top of stairs. Check the gate carries a BS EN 1930 mark on the product before use. A gate is a barrier, not a substitute for supervision. Suitable from around 6 months to approximately 24 months, and no longer effective once a child can climb it. Always close it fully.
