Cup holder and seat liner included.
Why the base is worth £40
This is the version to buy if you use the car regularly, for one reason: incorrect installation is the single biggest cause of car seat failure. Research consistently finds a large proportion of seats on UK roads are belt-fitted wrongly.
A base stays in the car. The carrier clicks in and out in seconds, with an indicator showing a correct fit each time. You remove the opportunity to get it wrong on every journey.
Your car must have ISOFIX anchor points — metal loops in the gap between the rear seat back and base. Most cars after 2006 have them on the outer rear seats, but not always in the middle. Check your handbook before ordering.
What 3-in-1 means
- Carrycot — lie-flat, from birth. Newborns need to lie flat.
- Pushchair seat — from around 6 months, once they sit supported.
- Infant car seat — clicks onto the chassis, so a sleeping baby moves from car to pram undisturbed.
The two-hour rule
Infant carriers hold a baby semi-upright, and guidance is to limit continuous time to around two hours. A small baby's head can drop forward and restrict their airway. The car seat on the chassis is for the walk from car to cafe, not a whole afternoon — use the carrycot for that.
Safety
Never fit a rear-facing infant carrier in a front seat with an active airbag. Always use the harness in every mode. Engage the brake whenever stationary. Do not hang heavy bags from the handle.
Check the carrycot, seat and carrier are fully clicked on by lifting each before setting off. Read the manual and keep it. Replace the car seat and base after any collision, however minor.
