Read this first: where a pressure gate can and cannot go
Pressure-fit gates must never be used at the top of stairs. They hold position by tension against the door frame with no fixed anchor, and can be pushed out of the opening under load — by a child leaning on it, or an adult stumbling into it.
At the top of a staircase, use a screw-fit gate. This is the consistent advice from gate manufacturers, RoSPA and the Child Accident Prevention Trust.
A pressure gate is suitable for:
- The bottom of stairs
- Doorways between rooms
- Kitchen and hallway openings
- Keeping pets out of a room
What you get
This listing is a pack of two gates. Most homes need two — usually one at the foot of the stairs and one on a kitchen door.
- No drilling, screws or tools required
- One-handed opening
- Dual locking mechanism against accidental opening
Measuring your opening
Measure the narrowest point of the gap at the height the gate will sit — door frames are rarely parallel.
- 77-86cm — gate as supplied
- 86-93cm — with a 7cm extension
- 93-100cm — with a 14cm extension
- 100-107cm — with 7cm and 14cm extensions
- 107-114cm — with two 14cm extensions
Fitting it correctly
- Fit against solid, flat surfaces both sides — not skirting boards, radiators, banister spindles or unsupported plasterboard.
- Tighten all four pressure pads evenly until the fit indicators engage.
- Push hard on the gate from both sides before relying on it.
- Re-check the tension weekly. Pressure fittings work loose over time and with seasonal frame movement.
Important safety information
Not for use at the top of stairs. Read and retain the manufacturer's instructions. Check the gate carries a BS EN 1930 mark — the British and European standard for child safety barriers — on the product itself before use.
A gate is a barrier, not a substitute for supervision. Suitable from around 6 months to approximately 24 months. Once a child can climb the gate it no longer protects them and may itself become a fall risk. Do not let children climb or swing on it, and always close it fully.
