Choosing by what you need them for
Everyday and work
Cotton-rich ankle socks are the default and fine for most days. Bamboo is the upgrade worth making, softer, better at wicking moisture, and naturally odour-resistant, which matters if you're in boots or trainers all day.
Bamboo lace styles give you the breathability with something that looks deliberate rather than functional.
Walking and outdoors
Merino wool, and it's genuinely worth the difference. Wool insulates even when damp, regulates temperature in both directions, and resists odour far longer than cotton. Cotton holds sweat against the skin, and wet cotton inside a walking boot is how blisters form.
For wellingtons, look for a knee-length wellington sock. Wellies have no lining and rub at the calf; a tall sock is the only thing between you and that.
Cold weather
Thermal socks have a brushed inner face that traps warm air. Ultra chunky wool thermals are for genuinely cold conditions, outdoors in winter, unheated houses. They're too warm for most indoor use.
Bed socks
A specific category worth understanding. Cold feet are one of the most common reasons people struggle to drop off, because falling asleep requires your core temperature to drop slightly and your body does that by releasing heat through the extremities. Cold feet interrupt that.
Bed socks should be loose, not tight, a compressive sock defeats the purpose. Look for non-slip grips if you have hard floors and get up in the night.
Slippers and around the house
Fluffy and fur-lined slipper socks are warmer than slippers and quieter on stairs. Always choose non-slip grips if you have wooden or tiled floors. Fluffy socks on smooth flooring are a genuine falls risk, particularly on stairs.
Sizing
Most of this range is UK 4-8, covering the majority of adult women. Sock sizing is forgiving, but a sock that's too large bunches under the arch and causes rubbing.
If you're between sizes on a thermal or walking sock, size up, thick socks lose a little length after washing, and you want room for the sock to loft rather than compress.
Materials
- Cotton rich: soft, breathable, cheap. Absorbs and holds moisture, so poor for walking or sport.
- Bamboo: softer than cotton, wicks moisture, resists odour. Best everyday choice.
- Merino wool: warm without overheating, insulates when damp. Best for walking and winter.
- Alpaca: warmer than sheep's wool for the same weight and naturally hypoallergenic, with no lanolin. Worth trying if wool irritates you.
- Thermal and brushed: raised inner face trapping warm air. Excellent outdoors, too warm indoors.
Washing
Wash at 40°C, or 30°C for wool, bamboo and alpaca. Turn inside out, most wear happens on the inside of the sole.
No fabric conditioner. It coats the fibres and ruins the moisture-wicking properties on bamboo and merino, which is the main thing you paid for.
Dry flat or on low heat. High heat shrinks wool and degrades any elastane in the cuff. Fluffy slipper socks in particular will matt permanently in a hot tumble dryer.
When to replace
When the cushioning flattens or the cuff stops gripping, not when a hole appears. A sock that slides down all day has failed even if it looks fine.
Fluffy socks are finished when the pile has matted, at that point they've lost most of their warmth as well as their comfort.
