Dog Collars & Leads
Dog collars and matching leads from Ralph & Co in two ranges: the Lignify range, made from a vegan-friendly alternative to leather in colours from oxblood red to duck egg blue, and the Lincoln and Balmoral range, which pairs tweed or herringbone fabric with leather. Collars come in sizes for toy breeds up to large dogs, with neck measurements on every product page.
How to measure your dog for a collar
Use a soft tape measure around the middle of your dog's neck, where the collar will sit. Choose the size whose neck range includes your measurement, ideally with your dog's measurement towards the middle of the range so there is room to adjust either way.
Once the collar is on, you should be able to slide two fingers flat between the collar and your dog's neck. Any looser and it may slip over the head; any tighter and it will rub. Check the fit regularly on puppies, which can outgrow a collar in weeks.
Lignify or tweed and leather?
- Lignify is a vegan-friendly alternative to leather. The collars and leads are water-resistant and come in a wide range of solid colours, so a collar and lead can be matched.
- Tweed and leather (the Lincoln in brown herringbone and the Balmoral in grey herringbone) combine woven upholstery fabric with leather, and match the Lincoln and Balmoral dog beds and blankets.
Choosing a lead
A fixed lead of around 110cm, the length of the Lignify leads, gives good control on pavements and in towns while leaving your dog room to walk comfortably at your side. Clip the lead to the collar's D-ring, never to the buckle, and check the clip and stitching every few weeks for wear.
What the law says about dog collars and leads
Under the Control of Dogs Order 1992, a dog in a public place in Great Britain must wear a collar with the name and address of its owner on it, either on the collar itself or on an attached tag. A phone number is optional but sensible. Microchipping is a separate legal requirement and does not replace the collar and tag.
The Highway Code asks you to keep a dog on a short lead when walking on a pavement, road or path shared with cyclists or horse riders. Local rules may also require leads in parks, on beaches or near livestock, so look out for signs.
Caring for collars and leads
Wipe Lignify collars and leads with a damp cloth after muddy walks and let them dry naturally, away from radiators. For tweed and leather, brush off dried mud and wipe the leather; avoid soaking it. Replace any collar or lead that shows cracking, fraying or a loose buckle.
Common questions
Can my dog wear the collar all the time?
Many owners leave a well-fitted collar on during the day. Take it off for unsupervised time in a crate if your dog could catch it on the bars.
Which size is right for a growing puppy?
Measure the neck and choose the size that fits now, then move up as your puppy grows. Do not buy a size too big to grow into, as it can slip off.
Do the collars and leads match?
Mostly. Every Lignify collar colour has a matching lead (pink is available as a lead only), and the Lincoln and Balmoral collars and leads match each other and the beds of the same name.
