Check the safety standard before you buy

A cot is one of the few nursery items with a legal standard behind it. Confirm the cot carries a BS EN 716 mark — the British and European standard for children's cots — and that the mattress meets BS 1877-10 for fire safety and construction.

Ask us or check the product itself. Do not take a listing's word for it, including ours.

What it is

A cot bed in pine with a storage drawer underneath and a mattress included, in white or grey.

Cot bed, not cot. The difference matters: a cot is outgrown at around 18 months to 2 years, while a cot bed converts to a toddler bed and lasts to roughly 4 or 5. At £168.99 including a mattress, that's the better value of the two.

Measure your room and the mattress

Standard cot bed dimensions are 140 x 70cm for the mattress. Confirm the external frame dimensions before ordering — cot beds are considerably larger than cots and catch people out in small rooms.

The mattress must fit with no gap wider than 3cm between it and the cot sides. A gap a baby can wedge into is a suffocation and entrapment risk, which is why a cot and mattress bought together is generally safer than mixing brands.

Safer sleep

  • Baby on their back, feet to the foot of the cot
  • Firm, flat mattress with a well-fitting sheet, and nothing else in the cot
  • No pillows, duvets, quilts, bumpers or soft toys under 12 months
  • Room temperature 16-20°C
  • Sleep in the same room as your baby for the first six months, day and night

Use a correctly sized baby sleeping bag rather than blankets. Full guidance at lullabytrust.org.uk.

Assembly and positioning

Assemble fully following the manufacturer's instructions and re-tighten all fixings after a few weeks — new timber settles and bolts work loose.

Position the cot away from windows, blind cords, curtain cords, radiators and heaters. Blind and curtain cords are a strangulation risk and must be out of reach, including reach from a standing baby.

Lower the mattress base as soon as your baby can sit up, and lower it again when they can pull to standing.

When to stop using it

Move to the toddler bed configuration when your child can climb out, or when the cot side reaches below their chest while standing.

A note on mattresses

Guidance is a new mattress for each baby where possible, and always for a baby other than your own. If you reuse one it must be firm, flat, clean, dry and undamaged, with no tears in the cover.
