How long a Moses basket lasts
Shorter than most people expect. A Moses basket suits a newborn up to roughly 3 to 4 months, or around 9kg — but the real limit is developmental, not age.
Stop using it as soon as your baby can roll over, push up on their hands and knees, or sit unaided. At that point the sides become a hazard rather than a boundary, and they need to move to a cot.
Knowing that in advance is worth more than any feature. A Moses basket is a short-term convenience, not a first bed.
What it is for
Keeping a newborn sleeping in the same room as you, which the Lullaby Trust advises for the first six months, day and night. A basket can be carried between rooms so the baby naps where you are.
The rocking stand lets you settle a baby without lifting them out.

Safer sleep in a Moses basket
- Baby on their back, feet to the foot of the basket
- Firm, flat mattress with a well-fitting sheet — nothing else in the basket
- No pillows, quilts, bumpers or loose bedding for under 12 months
- Room temperature 16-20°C
- Sleep in the same room as your baby for the first six months

Using the stand safely
Place the stand on a flat, level floor away from radiators, curtain cords, blind cords and anything the baby could reach as they grow.
Never carry the basket while it is on the stand, and never leave a baby in the basket on the stand unattended once they start moving. Lock the rocking function when the baby is asleep and unattended.
Carrying it
Always carry a Moses basket with both hands underneath, never by the handles alone with the baby inside — handles and their fixings are the part that fails. Check the handles and base for wear before every use.
Never carry it up or down stairs with the baby in it.
