What a summer footmuff is for

Not warmth. A winter footmuff in June is how a child overheats in a pram.

A summer liner does three other things. It cushions a thin pushchair seat, which makes a long walk more comfortable. It protects the seat fabric from everything a child spills, and comes out to be washed rather than requiring you to wash the whole pram. And it wicks, so a child is not sitting against sweaty nylon on a hot day.

Universal, with slots for a standard pushchair harness. Check your slot positions line up before first use. Machine washable — which is the main point of a liner.

Keeping a child cool in a pram

Never drape a blanket or muslin over a pram to shade them. Covering a pram traps heat and the temperature inside rises sharply within minutes. Use a clip-on parasol, which shades without blocking airflow.

Dress lightly, offer extra feeds in hot weather, and keep babies under six months out of direct sunlight altogether. Check the back of the neck rather than their hands to judge temperature.

Using it safely

Always fasten the harness through the liner slots and against your child, never over the top.
