A footmuff for an infant car seat, with pre-cut harness slots that fit both 3-point and 5-point harnesses.
Why a footmuff instead of a coat
This is the important part. A child should never be strapped into a car seat wearing a thick coat. Padding compresses instantly in a collision, which leaves the harness dangerously loose at the moment it's needed — several centimetres of slack that weren't there when you buckled up.
A footmuff solves that. The harness passes through the slots and sits directly against the child, while the insulation stays outside the harness where it can't compress into slack.
Fitting it correctly
- Thread the harness straps through the slots in the footmuff before placing your child in
- Buckle the harness against your child's body — not over the footmuff
- Check you can fit no more than two fingers between the harness and the collarbone
- Lay the top layer over the child once they're secured
Nothing should sit behind your child's back or under the harness. If the footmuff has a padded section that would go between the child and the seat, do not use it in the car — only footmuffs where the harness reaches the child directly are appropriate.

Care
Machine washable — worth knowing, because these get a lot of use through a winter.
Safety
Only ever use with the harness passing through the designated slots. Remove the footmuff for washing and check the slots for wear. Do not use any car seat accessory not supplied with your seat if it prevents the harness sitting flat against your child.
