Why you need more than you think
Muslins are the one item on a baby list nobody regrets over-buying. They end up on your shoulder, under the baby head, over the changing mat, as a bib, a comforter and a mop. You will have one in every room and still not find one.
Six is a reasonable start. Twelve is what most people end up owning.
Why 80x80cm matters
The large size is the useful one. Smaller muslins around 60cm cover a shoulder and not much else. At 80cm square you can swaddle a newborn or fold it into a decent changing surface.
Why cotton, and why they improve
Cotton muslin is a loose open weave, which is why it is absorbent and breathable at the same time. Unusually, it gets better with use — the weave softens and becomes more absorbent with every wash, so the oldest muslin in the drawer is always the favourite.
Wash before first use. They feel stiff out of the packet and soft after three washes.
Using them safely
Never leave a muslin loose in a cot or pram with a sleeping baby, and never drape one over a pram to block light or sun. Loose fabric near a sleeping baby is a suffocation risk, and covering a pram traps heat — the temperature inside rises fast even in mild weather. Use a proper clip-on sunshade instead.
Care
Machine washable at 60°C, which is worth knowing for the ones that see the worst.
