A children's tricycle with a steel frame, 16-inch wheels, a rear seat and a front basket, for ages 3 and over.

Why a trike rather than a bike

Three wheels mean no balancing, so a child can concentrate on pedalling and steering — which are separate skills and easier learned one at a time. Most children move to a balance bike or pedal bike from here.

The rear seat carries a sibling or a doll, and the basket carries whatever they insist on bringing.

Safety

A correctly fitted helmet meeting EN 1078 should be worn. Trikes are stable but children still tip them, usually by turning sharply at speed.

Adult supervision at all times. Not for use on roads, and keep well away from traffic, kerbs, slopes and water.

Check before each use that the wheels are secure, the pedals are tight and the handlebar clamp is firm. Steel frames loosen with use.

The rear seat

Only carry a passenger where the trike is designed for it and the rider is confident. A second child changes the balance considerably and makes it much easier to tip.

Both children need helmets.

Check the standard

Confirm the trike carries a UKCA or CE mark and EN 71 toy safety marking before use.
