The six stages, and what they actually mean
The point of a 6-in-1 is that it replaces a pushchair and then becomes a trike, rather than being a trike a toddler cannot yet use.
- Parent-push with full harness and canopy — from 10 months, essentially a buggy
- Parent-push with footrest — as they grow but still cannot reach pedals
- Parent-push, pedals engaged — they learn the pedalling motion with you steering
- Parent-steer, child pedals
- Child steers, parent pushes
- Independent trike — handle and canopy removed
Realistically most children reach true independent pedalling somewhere around two and a half to three.
Folding
Folds for the boot or a hallway. Worth checking your boot depth — a folded trike is bulkier than a folded stroller and this is the most common complaint about the category.
Which model
The Xplor is the base version at £99.99. Xplor Plus and Xplor Ultimate add features at £119.99 and £129.99. All three cover the same 10 months to 4 years and the same six stages.
Safety
Always use the harness in the parent-push stages. A trike seat is higher and less enclosed than a pushchair seat, and children lean out.
Once your child is riding independently, a correctly fitted helmet meeting EN 1078 should be worn — the same standard as for scooters and bikes. Falls at this age are frequent and usually harmless, but head injuries are the exception.
Not for use on roads. Supervise near traffic, kerbs and slopes; a trike has no brakes at the independent stage.
Check the harness, wheel fixings and folding latches before each use, and make sure the fold is fully locked before your child gets in.
