Choosing a leash
A leash is usually chosen to be roughly the length of your board, so a 6 ft leash suits boards of around that length and longer leashes suit mid-lengths and longboards. Thicker cords are the usual choice for bigger surf, while thinner cords create less drag in smaller waves. Check the cord, cuff and swivels for nicks or wear before each session and replace the leash if you find any damage.
A knee leash attaches below the knee rather than at the ankle and is a common choice on longboards, where it keeps the cord away from your feet when you walk the board.
