Measure the mattress rather than going by what the cot is called. All three sizes are sold separately.

Why four rather than two

Two is the theoretical minimum — one on, one in the wash. In practice, a leaked nappy at 3am when the spare is still damp on the airer is a bad night for everyone.

Four means you always have a dry sheet to hand and you're doing laundry on your schedule rather than the baby's. It's the single most useful thing to over-buy in a nursery.

Why it must fit snugly

Lullaby Trust safer sleep guidance is a firm, flat mattress with a well-fitting sheet and nothing else in the cot for babies under 12 months. A loose sheet can work free and bunch, which is a suffocation risk.

The elasticated hem grips all the way round rather than just at the corners. Check it's taut each time you make the cot, and replace any sheet whose elastic has gone slack.

Why 100% cotton

Cotton breathes, which matters for temperature regulation — overheating is a SIDS risk factor. Polyester blends trap heat. Cotton also softens with washing rather than pilling.
