Why four

Two is the theoretical minimum. In practice a leaked nappy at 3am when the spare is damp on the airer makes for a miserable night. Four means there's always a dry one and laundry happens on your schedule.

It's also the size that lasts — a cot bed converts to a toddler bed, so these sheets stay useful for years rather than months.

Why jersey rather than woven

Jersey is knitted, so it stretches for a tighter, smoother fit with no wrinkling. On a cot bed's larger surface that matters more than on a small cot. It's softer against the skin and needs no ironing.

Why it must fit snugly

Lullaby Trust guidance is a firm flat mattress with a well-fitting sheet and nothing else in the cot under 12 months. A loose sheet can bunch, which is a suffocation risk. Check it's taut each time and replace any sheet whose elastic has slackened.

Machine washable. Wash before first use. Jersey may shrink slightly first wash, usually improving the fit.
