Why two is the right number

Sun comes through both sides of a car across a journey, and it changes side every time you turn a corner. One shade covers the window your child is next to now; you want the other within an hour.

Two is the sensible minimum for one child in the back.

Why it matters more than comfort

A car interior heats fast in direct sun, and a rear-facing baby has no way to turn away from it or tell you they are too hot. Glare also wakes sleeping babies, which is its own problem on a long drive.

Fitting

Suction cups onto clean, dry glass. Clean the window first — suction fails on dust, and a shade dropping into the footwell while you drive is a distraction.

Check they do not obstruct your view in the mirrors.

Important

Sun shades reduce glare and direct sun. They do not stop a car overheating. Never leave a child alone in a parked car, in any weather — temperatures inside can rise dangerously within minutes even on a mild day.

Care

Wipe the suction cups clean when they stop gripping. Most failures are dirt, not wear.
