The neckline is the whole point

The rigid curved neckline holds the fabric away from your chest so you can look down and see your baby, and they can see you. That matters more than it sounds — you need to check the latch, and a baby who cannot see your face is more likely to fuss and pull off.

A muslin or a scarf thrown over your shoulder does not do this. It sits flat against you, so you are feeding blind and the baby is under fabric with restricted airflow.

Whether you need one at all

Worth saying plainly: you are legally entitled to breastfeed anywhere in the UK, and the Equality Act 2010 makes it unlawful to ask you to stop or leave. A cover is for your comfort if you want one, not something you owe anybody.

Plenty of people use one for the first few months while getting confident with the latch, then stop. Some never use one. Both are fine.

Fabric

Lightweight and breathable, which matters — a heavy cover gets hot for both of you within minutes.

Other uses

Doubles as a pram shade at the right angle, a changing mat cover, or a light blanket. Most people who own one use it well beyond feeding.

Machine washable. Wash before first use.

Safety

Keep your baby in view at all times while feeding. Never leave a cover draped over a sleeping baby, and do not use it to cover a pram — trapped heat builds quickly.
