Check your mattress size first

Spacesaver cots are the narrow ones designed to fit a small bedroom or alongside a bed. Their mattresses are a different size again from standard cots.

• Spacesaver cot — 100 x 52cm (this sheet). Fits mattresses 85-100cm long and 45-52cm wide.
• Cot — 120 x 60cm
• Cot bed — 140 x 70cm

Measure the mattress rather than going by the cot name — this is the size most often bought wrong, because spacesaver is used loosely by different manufacturers.

Why it must fit snugly

Lullaby Trust safer sleep guidance is a firm, flat mattress with a well-fitting sheet and nothing else in the cot for babies under 12 months. A loose sheet can work free and bunch, which is a suffocation risk.

The elasticated hem grips all the way round rather than just at the corners. Check it is taut each time you make the cot up.

Why 100% cotton

Cotton breathes, which matters for temperature regulation — overheating is a SIDS risk factor, and a spacesaver cot in a small room heats up faster than a standard one in a larger nursery.

Why a pack of two

One on, one in the wash. A pack of four is available if you would rather not do laundry at 3am.
